Wouldn’t that be too good to be true? Saving the world just like that. Not exactly in the “Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly”-tradition, but with almost the same simplicity?
The world’s greenest search engine Ecosia promises that and nothing less.
We all know the problem. Everybody would like to change the world. But not, if they actually have to change their own habits for it. Laziness still governs the world – even if everybody’s intentions are good. But if changing the world just a mouse-click away; if the choice between good and evil is just a few letters behind the www. – then, who could resist?
I, for my part, cannot resist the temptation of such a prospect.
The idea of Ecosia is fairly simple: The company has pledged to donate 80% of their revenue from sponsored-links to a WWF project to save the rainforest. So statistically, every search on Ecosia will save 2 square meters of rainforest. Just like that. Without causing any additional cost for the user.
What makes the Berlin-based company even more likable: unlike search engines like Google, they do not save your search history or profile your usage of the side: within 48 hours of your search the data will be deleted from their servers.
Another reason to save the world.
For more info: here is a Guardian article on the service. Read it. Or watch the video on Ecosia.org – and if you like it – like I do – spread the word, because Ecosia doesn’t blow millions into advertisements…
