There are a few rules you have to stick you when writing your final thesis. One of them is reducing your social contacts to the minimum, focusing your energies on reading, writing, thinking. When looking back at the last month or so, I am pretty sure that’s what I did. The average response time to an email of a friend was somewhere between two and five days and partying was limited to a lonely, unexciting couch in my favourite bar, somewhere far off from the roaring buzz of the Reeperbahn.
So how could I dare – right there, on the 30th page of my thesis – to spend an entire week simply enjoying myself with the one’s I hold dearest?
How dare I roam the streets of St. Pauli on a rainy Monday night, when even the tourists are rare; talking, laughing, walking, searching with Cat for a bunch of young, frizzy haired Scots that were never to be found?
How dare I spend my Thursday afternoon on a cosy couch in Sternschanze, drinking Earl Grey and watching the rain fall, while chitchatting with one of my oldest friends back from high school?
How dare I spend my Friday afternoon baking tank-cookies (don’t ask me… they were a gift…) in order to later drop them off at some spacious 36 hours house-warming-birthday party I didn’t know anyone and stayed only for 15 minutes?
How dare I invade the St. Pauli apartment of my former flat mates, chatting, laughing, drinking beer, and even move on to the beloved couch at Kleinraumdisko only to take ridiculous pictures of my friend and me at three in the morning?
How dare I meet up with another friend the following day at Don’t Tell Momma, to celebrate his newly found Hamburg apartment, eating an obscenely delicious American Cheese Cake and considering the cost of living in the city?
How dare I spend the rest of the day baking another birthday present cake, that contained an unhealthy amound of chocolate, and deliver it to a friendly but somewhat clumsy party somewhere in Barmbek?
How dare I spend two hours on the phone this noon, talking to my family and later hang in front of the TV watching a movie with three of my best friends?
How dare I?
